WARNING: The engine exhaust from
this product contains chemicals known to the
State of California to cause cancer, birth de-
fects or other reproductive harm.
CUTTING SAFETY
WARNING: Inspect the area before
each use. Remove objects (rocks, broken
glass, nails, wire, etc.) which can be thrown
by or become entangled in line. Hard objects
can damage trimmer head and be thrown
causing serious injury.
S Use unit properly. Use only for trimming,
mowing, and sweeping. Do not use for edg-
ing, pruning, or hedge trimming. Do not force
unit. It will do the job better, and with less risk
of injury, at the rate for which it was designed.
S Keep firm footing and balance. Do not over-
reach.
S Keep all parts of your body away from spin-
ning line and muffler. Keep engine and cutting
head below waist level. A hot muffler can
cause serious burns.
SPECIAL NOTICE: This unit is not
equipped with a temperature limiting muffler and
spark arresting screen which meets the require-
ments of California Codes 4442 and 4443. All
U.S. forest land and the states of California, Ida-
ho, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon,
and Washington require by law that many inter-
nal combustion engines to be equipped with a
spark arrestor screen. If you operate in a locale
where such regulations exist, you are legally re-
sponsible for installing and maintaining the oper-
ating condition of these parts. Failure to do so is
a violation of the law. If a spark arrestor is re-
quired in your area, contact your authorized ser-
vice dealer for the proper kit.
S Cut only from your right to your left. Cutting
with the line on right side of the shield will
throw debris away from the operator.
S Use only in daylight or in good artificial light.
S Use only for jobs explained in this manual.
SAFETY NOTICE: Exposure to vibrations
through prolonged use of gasoline powered
hand tools could cause blood vessel or nerve
damage in the fingers, hands, and joints of
people prone to circulation disorders or abnor-
mal swellings. Prolonged use in cold weather
has been linked to blood vessel damage in
otherwise healthy people. If symptoms occur
such as numbness, pain, loss of strength,
change in skin color or texture, or loss of feeling
in the fingers, hands, or joints, discontinue the
use of this tool and seek medical attention. An
anti-vibration system does not guarantee the
avoidance of these problems. Users who oper-
ate power tools on a continual and regular basis
must monitor closely their physical condition
and the condition of this tool.

HOW TO START YOUR UNIT
HELPFUL TIP
To obtain the correct oil mix
ratio, pour 3.2 ounces of
2-cycle synthetic oil into
one gallon of fresh gas.
WARNING: The trimmer head will
turn while starting the engine. Avoid any con-
tact with the muffler. A hot muffler can cause
serious burns.
HELPFUL TIP
If your engine still does not
start after following these
instructions, please call
1 -800 -554-6723.
This engine is certified to operate on un-
leaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline
must be mixed with a good quality synthetic
2-cycle air-cooled engine oil designed to be
mixed at a ratio of 40:1. Poulan/WEED EATER
brand synthetic oil is recommended. Mix gas-
oline and oil at a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is
obtained by mixing 3.2 ounces (95 ml) of oil
with 1 gallon (4 liters) of unleaded gasoline.
DO NOT USE automotive oil or boat oil.
These oils will cause engine damage. When
mixing fuel, follow instructions printed oncon-
tainer. Once oil is added to gasoline, shake
container momentarily to assure that the fuel
is thoroughly mixed. Always read and follow
the safety rules relating to fuel before fueling
your unit.
STARTING A COLD ENGINE (or a
warm engine after running out of
fuel)
1. Move ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
3. Move choke lever to the FULL CHOKE
position.
4. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and hold
through all remaining steps.
5. Pull starter rope handle sharply until engine
sounds as if it is trying to start, but do not pull
rope more than 6 times.
6. As soon as engine sounds as if it is trying to
start, move choke lever to HALF CHOKE
position.
IMPORTANT
Experience indicates that alcohol blended
fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or
methanol) can attract moisture which leads to
separation and formation of acids during stor-
age. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system
of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine
problems, empty the fuel system before stor-
age for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank,
start the engine and let it run untilthe fuellines
and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next
season.Never use engine or carburetor
cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent
damage may occur. See the STORAGE sec-
tion for additional information.
7. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs,
but no more than 6 pulls. NOTE: If the en-
gine doesn’t start after 6 pulls (at theHALF
CHOKE position), move the choke lever to
the FULL CHOKE position and press the
primer bulb 6 times. Squeeze and hold the
throttle trigger and pull the starter rope 2
more times. Move the choke lever to the
HALF CHOKE position and pull the starter
rope until the engine runs, but no more
than 6 pulls. If the engine still doesn’t start,
it is probably flooded. Proceed to START-
ING A FLOODED ENGINE.
8. Once the engine starts, allow it to run 10
seconds, then move the choke lever to the
OFF CHOKE position. Allow theunit to run
for 30 more seconds at OFF CHOKE be-
fore releasing the throttle trigger.
HELPFUL TIP
If your engine switch reads
“push to stop”, it is always
in the ON position.
NOTE: If engine dies with the choke le-
ver in the OFF CHOKE position, move the
choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position
and pull the rope until engine runs, but no
more than 6 pulls.
HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT
S To stop the engine, move the ON/OFF
switch to the OFF position until the unit has
fully stopped.
S If engine does not stop, move choke to the
FULL CHOKE position.
STARTING A WARM ENGINE
1. Move ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
2. Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE
position.
5

3. Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger. Keep
throttle trigger fully squeezed until the engine
runs smoothly.
NOTE: Keep left and right hands on grips
during operation of unit as shown above to
avoid covering air intake holes located on un-
derside of upper handle.
4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs,
but no more than 5 pulls.
5. Allow engine to run 15 seconds, then move
WARNING: Always wear eye protec-
tion. Never lean over the trimmer head.
Rocks or debris canricochet or be throwninto
eyes and face and cause blindness or other
serious injury.
the choke lever to OFF CHOKE.
NOTE: If engine has not started, pull starter
rope 5 more pulls. If enginestill does not run, it
is probably flooded.
Do not run the engine at a higher speed than
necessary. The cutting line will cut efficiently
when the engine is run at less than full throttle.
At lower speeds, there is less engine noise and
vibration.
Always release the throttle trigger and allow the
engine to return to idle speed when not cutting.
To stop engine:
STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE
Flooded engines can be started by placing
the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position;
then, pull the rope to clear the engine of ex-
cess fuel. This could requirepulling thestarter
handle many times depending on how badly
the unit is flooded.
If the unit still doesn’t start, refer to
TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call
1-800-554-6723.
